Frequently Asked Questions
How do I become an "Active Member"?
Active Member status is granted to participants who attend at least 2 meetings within a single season (Sept-May). Active Members will have access to members-only resources, including handouts/slides from previous presentations and ability to view the member directory, which can be accessed via the Member Content tab on our website. Active Member status is maintained by attending at least 1 meeting in each subsequent calendar year.
Can I get CEUs for attending NYCDSG events?
We are not an ASHA CEU provider, but NYCDSG events meet ASHA criteria for professional development hours and can be counted towards your certification maintenance requirement if you plan to self-certify. As per ASHA CEU maintenance guidelines, participants are required to maintain a record of professional development activities in case of a future audit. Information about ASHA record-keeping requirements for professional development activities can be found here.
We are unable to provide certificates of attendance for every participant; instead, we will provide prefilled copies of the ASHA Verification of Attendance form at each event for anyone who is interested. Please be sure to fill in your information and have the form signed by a member of the NYCDSG team before leaving the event. We are not able to provide verification of participation for past events.
Are your events live-streamed or recorded?
We do not record or stream our events. We feel that the in-person format is essential to the spirit of NYCDSG and facilitates the collaboration and community-building we aim to promote. We hear often from SLPs who are not local but are interested in our events - we encourage you to come visit us, if possible, or consider starting a group of your own!
Can you share the slides from a past presentation?
Slides or handouts will be posted to the Handouts page following each meeting. Access is limited to Active Members (see FAQ above for more information about Active Member status).
Can graduate students and clinical fellows join the group?
Absolutely! We welcome students at the graduate level and beyond to join NYCDSG and attend our meetings. Throughout the year, we feature selected topics that are specifically geared towards students and trainees.
I am seeking a clinical fellowship or new position, can you help?
Our Job Board is a community forum where group members can share information about job openings. Our leadership team moderates the forum and will add information about open VA positions to this forum as it becomes available. If you want to be notified about new posts, click Follow All Categories on the forum home page to subscribe. If you are hiring for your team or facility, we encourage you to post the information directly. This will allow you to receive notifications about comments on your post and update or remove the post at any time.
I am a group member and would like to present, how can I get involved?
We welcome group members with specific expertise to share their knowledge with our group. Topics can include any area relevant to medical SLPs or trainees interested in working in a medical setting. Please reach out via email at nycdysphagiastudygroup@gmail.com or via the Contact Form to discuss further. Please note, all meetings are held at the Manhattan VA Medical Center in NYC on weekday evenings. We are not able to support virtual presentations at this time.
I am a vendor or product representative, can you share my product/service with the group?
The spirit of NYCDSG is focused on community and collaboration around evidence-based practice. While we are always attuned to new information and technology in our field, our leadership team avoids promoting specific products/services. If you would like to share an external continuing education opportunity, please submit the event information via the form on our CEUs page. If you are interested in presenting to the group at one of our meetings, please reach out via email at nycdysphagiastudygroup@gmail.com or via the Contact Form to discuss further.
I am a person with dysphagia or a caregiver, can you assist me?
Group membership and participation is limited to licensed SLPs, clinical fellows, and graduate students. We are not able to provide medical advice or treatment. We encourage you to contact a local speech pathologist who can provide evaluation/treatment and connect you with other community resources.
What is the member directory? How can I opt in?
The Member Directory is a contact list of NYCDSG members who have opted in to having their information shared. You can opt in to the membership during the signup process or at any time from the My Account page. You can also update your contact information in My Account. While any member can opt in to the directory, only Active Members (see FAQ above for more information about Active Member status).will have access to view the directory.
Is NYCDSG affiliated with the VA?
No. While we are fortunate to host our events at the Manhattan VA campus, NYCDSG is an independent organization and is not affiliated with the US Department of Veterans Affairs or VA NY Harbor Healthcare System. Content presented on this website, NYCDSG social media accounts, and at our events does not represent the views or positions of the US Department of Veterans Affairs or VA NY Harbor Healthcare System
